A former California Fire Captain was in court for an arraignment on a set of 12 charges, where he allegedly engaged in sex crimes against minors. Peter Mock is facing a total of 134 charges across four separate and unique cases. The district attorney’s office filed the newest case at the beginning of 2026. Mock was arraigned on 12 charges and is expected to appear next for his case in late February for a plea and disposition hearing.
Peter Mock – Background and Employment
Peter Mock served as a Fire Captain with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). Public records show his employment at that rank was from at least 2018 through 2023.
Criminal Allegations Against Peter Mock
The following are the criminal allegations that were levied against former Fire Captain Peter Mock:
- In July 2022, Mock was arrested in Shasta County and charged with several counts of sexual assault involving minors. The initial case included dozens of allegations of child sexual abuse against individuals under the age of 14.
- Over time, additional alleged victims came forward. Prosecutors have expanded the number of charges significantly. So much so, at one point, there were over 120 counts related to child sexual assault filed against him.
- Subsequent filings brought the cumulative number to well over 130 alleged counts as investigations continued.
Despite the many charges against him, Mock has pleaded not guilty and is currently involved in ongoing legal proceedings.
Legal Remedies for Victims of Child Sexual Abuse
The legal system recognizes that victims of child sexual abuse can endure profound, lasting harm, both physically and psychologically. In California, victims of child sexual abuse are taken seriously. This is why there are multiple paths for justice, accountability, and healing. These pathways can include any or all of the following:
- Criminal prosecution
- Civil recovery
- Victim support services
Criminal prosecution can not only hold perpetrators accountable but also protect victims from further harm. The following penalties can come about:
- Prison or jail sentences
- Mandatory sex offender registration
- Protective or restraining orders
- Probation with strict conditions
Civil lawsuits for damages can be made against abusers and, in many cases, against institutions that enabled or failed to prevent abuse (think schools, churches, youth organizations, and employers, etc.). A civil claim can allow victims to recover financial compensation for losses they sustained.
California law provides for an extended statute of limitations for victims of child sexual abuse. This is because the state recognizes that young victims may be unable to come forward right away and report their abuse or take legal action until many years after they were traumatized. However, when they do, they can seek compensation for any or all of the following:
- Medical and therapy costs
- Emotional distress and psychological harm
- Pain and suffering
- Lost future earnings
- Punitive damages in extreme cases
